Allow me to raise my glass to UMDNJ-Toastmaster and District 83. I am proud to see that they are not afraid to push new members out in the the wonderful word of contest. The  Table topic contest winner was new comer Angela Mandrona, she has only been a Toastmaster for less then a month. I am very proud of her. I am a new member in the UMDNJ-Toastmasters club and I am thankful for the way my club exposes me to all the many great things available to me within my club and District 83.  I am encourage and motivated to get started making  speeches and winning contest. Weather you are on a slow stroll or a fast track UMDNJ-Toastmaster  has a place for you.

It was fun and excitingly presented by club member and  Area 53 Governor Kevin Thompson and ably assisted by ‘Babyboomer blogger’ Rosie Horner. Part 2 coming soon why don’t you join us?

Have You Heard a Tall Tale?

The second place winner of the Division “A” Tale Tale contest was our VP of Membership Markell Wilson.  He spoke about a scary hairy tale about a  giant purple gorilla.  It was a rainy night while he was taking an off road trip on his motor cycle when he sought shelter in a house.  He found a book on the table welcoming him as he entered,   It appeared that the book was almost speaking to him as he read it.

The book said not to mess with the green pad locked door.   Curiosity got the best of him so he opened it and went down the  creaky stairway.  He saw a blue door with a padlock on it informing him that there was a 15 foot tall gorilla inside.  There was specific instructions about the gorilla.  This is the making of a tall tale.  It is taking a story that could be possible and exaggerating it to the point of being unbelievable, hence a tall tale.

Well if you would like to hear how the stroy ends you have to visit our club so you can see Markell present it for you.  Believe you me it was fantastic and a must see.  It was good enough to win second place in the division and Markell has been a club member for a little more than a year.   If he can do it then so can you.  Come visit UMDNJ Toastmasters club.  We usually have a meeting every week.  Pick the time that works best with your schedule.   We look forward to seeing you there.

Better You Better World

This is the Theme for District 83’s Toastmaster’s 2009-2010 year.  The District Governor, who is elected at the Spring Conference every year, announces his/her theme for the coming year at that time.  Brian Lin, DTM our District Governor shares with us his vision for our Toastmaster year:

My theme this year is, “Better You, Better World.” I challenge you to be 1% better tomorrow as Ed Tate, “The 2000 World’s Champion of Public Speaking” put it at our Spring Conference. I challenge you to make a better speech next time. I challenge you to deal with your spouse, children, co-workers, friends, and relatives more effectively and more pleasantly. I challenge you to be better than you think you are. I challenge you to be a positive influence on people you touch. I challenge you to achieve anything you want if you set your mind and heart to it.

District 83 Better You Better World

Toastmasters International District 83 Better You Better World

With these big goals and challenges in mind, let’s start with achievable actions. Will you sign up for a speech at the next meeting, ask an acquaintance to come to a Toastmasters event, participate in Tall Tale or Table Topics contest next month, talk to a friend about our program, and/or come to the District Fall Conference on November 14th? Will you be better and help your world to be a better place? If you answer yes to any of these, you already made yourself better today. I look forward to a better tomorrow and a better world because of you!

Now that you have heard from Brian, the next step is up to you.  Investing the time in working your Toastmasters manuals is a great place to start.  We all have goals.  By working on your manuals you will not only reach your personal goals but help your club, area, division and district reach their goals.  The great thing about Toastmasters is the success of the member reflects the success of the organization.   Why not help your Toastmasters Club be successful by establishing your personal goals and meeting them this year.  And remember if you need help you have your fellow club members who will be more than happy to give you a hand.

All the best to you this Toastmaster Year,

Kevin Thompson, MPA, ACG, ALB
